The Lithuanian Navy is ramping up the surveillance of the NordBalt submarine electricity cable between Lithuania and Sweden in the Baltic Sea. The country’s military and the electricity transmission system operator Litgrid are stepping up their cooperation to protect critical submarine infrastructure under a signed cooperation agreement announced on Monday.
According to the armed forces, the two sides will exchange information on observed violations, unusual activities and upgrade protection measures.
“The agreement establishes a common goal that is important for Lithuania, which is ensuring the best possible security of the Baltic Sea underwater electricity infrastructure,” Litgrid CEO Rokas Masiulis said.
The move follows Swedish media reports on Sunday about attempts to damage the NordBalt cable.
The protection of energy infrastructure in the region became a renewed concern following the damage to the Estlink 2 submarine cable between Finland to Estonia, in a suspected act of sabotage on Christmas Day. In addition, four other telecommunication cables in the same region have recently been damaged.
