DHL cargo plane wreckage removed from crash site in Vilnius

The removal of the DHL cargo plane wreckage from its crash site was completed in Vilnius over the weekend and the police are no longer protecting the area.

“All [the wreckage] has been removed,” police department spokesman Ramūnas Matonis told BNS.

The removal of the smaller parts of the Boeing 737 aircraft began last Wednesday, and the rest of it, including the cockpit, was removed over Friday and Saturday.

The police already finished their work at the crash site and will no longer protect the area, Matonis said.

The DHL cargo plane crashed near the airport in Vilnius last Monday, killing one crew member, a Spanish national. There were a total of four crew members on board. The other three, a Spaniard, a German, and a Lithuanian were also injured, and one of them is in serious condition.

The plane also clipped a house occupied by 13 residents, but all of them escaped unharmed.

The cause of the plane crash is yet to be determined.

The Boeing 737 belongs to Spanish airline Swift Air and was used by DHL for parcel delivery. The aircraft was flying to Vilnius from Leipzig in Germany.
