The Lithuanian parliament, Seimas, voted on Thursday to approve the appointment of Social Democrat Gintautas Paluckas as the country’s new prime minister.
Eighty-eight MPs voted in favour, 36 voted against and six abstained.
Paluckas was nominated by President Gitanas Nausėda to lead the 19th government, following a proposal by a coalition of Social Democrats (LSDP), the Democratic Union "For Lithuania", and the Nemunas Dawn party. The coalition has 86 MPs in the 141-seat Seimas.
After being confirmed, Paluckas will meet with President Nausėda on Thursday to discuss the formation of his Cabinet of Ministers.
Paluckas has 15 days to form the cabinet and present his government’s programme to the Seimas.
Paluckas, 45-year-old computer scientist, was picked to lead the government after LSDP leader Vilija Blinkevičiūtė decided to remain in the European Parliament and refused both the premiership and a seat in the Seimas.
The Social Democrats won the general elections in October, securing 52 seats.
