Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has welcomed US President Joe Biden’s decision to allow Ukraine to use American long-range rockets for strikes inside Russia, calling it “a decisive moment” in the war.

“The day has come! Ukraine can now target military sites in Russia using long-range missiles. This is a decisive moment in Ukraine’s fight against the aggressor Russia,” Nausėda posted on X on Sunday.

“Peace cannot be achieved through weakness. Peace is the reward of the strong,” he added.

US media reported earlier on Sunday, citing sources, that Biden had for the first time authorised Ukraine to use American-supplied missiles for limited strikes inside Russia.

This decision marks a major shift in US policy and comes as President Biden prepares to leave the White House. President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to scale back American support for Ukraine and bring the war to an end as quickly as possible.

According to sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, the move was a response to North Korea’s decision to deploy thousands of troops to help Russia in its war against Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has long sought authorisation from Washington to use the powerful Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) to hit targets inside Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that such a green light would mean that NATO is “at war” with Russia.
