The EU’s Cyber Rapid Response Team (CRRT), led by Lithuania, was activated during Moldova’s presidential election, the Defence Ministry said on Wednesday.

The team was deployed to ensure cybersecurity during the election and the referendum on enshrining EU accession in Moldova’s constitution.

Eight EU member states contributed to what was the third and largest CRRT mission in Moldova.

The CRRT and their Moldovan colleagues conducted vulnerability assessments of different governmental services and monitored the cyber security situation during the electoral process, the ministry said.

The deployment followed a request for support from the Moldovan Information Technology and Cyber Security Service (STISC).

In addition to Lithuania, the mission in Chișinău also involved cybersecurity experts from Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, and Romania.

The Cyber Rapid Response Teams and Mutual Assistance in Cybersecurity project, which Lithuania has led since 2018, is one of the most successful among over 60 Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) initiatives, according to the ministry.

The project’s main goal is to prevent cyberattacks and respond to cyber incidents in EU member states, EU institutions, and EU Common Security and Defence Policy military missions and operations, as well as provide support to partners.

The CRRT project currently involves 11 EU countries: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Netherlands, Romania and Slovenia.
