Vilnius Short Film Festival becomes Oscar qualifying festival

BNS 2024.10.15 11:18

The Vilnius Short Film Festival announced on Tuesday that its winner will be eligible to compete for an Oscar.

“Last week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organisation behind the Oscars, revealed its list of film festivals whose winners can qualify for Oscar consideration. For the first time, a Lithuanian film festival has been included on this list – the Vilnius Short Film Festival,” the organisers said in a press release.

This means that from now on, the winner of the festival’s Grand Prix will have the chance to vie for an Oscar nomination.

“This significant recognition is an important milestone, not only for the festival but also for the broader Lithuanian film and cultural community,” the organisers said.

The Oscars have been presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences annually since 1929 in recognition of cinematic achievements.

Short films can qualify for the awards in categories such as Best Live Action, Best Documentary or Best Animated Short Film in three ways.

First, the short film must have been commercially screened in US cinemas. Second, it can qualify by winning a Student Oscar. Last, it can be eligible if it wins an award at a qualifying festival.

The Academy’s Short Films Qualifying Festival List includes more than 180 film festivals worldwide, such as in Cannes, Berlin, Venice and Locarno, as well as the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, among others.

Film festivals can earn a spot on the list through a selection process conducted by a commission of the Academy.

Key factors considered during the selection process include the festival’s strong and solid recent history (number of competitive programs, high artistic value of the films, diversity of programmes, and professionalism of jury members), and the festival’s reputation on the international stage.

Under the Vilnius Short Film Festival’s rules, all films participating in the competition programmes – both international and national – are eligible for the Grand Prix. The winner of next year’s Grand Prix will be eligible to compete for the 98th Academy Awards, scheduled for March 2026.

The Vilnius Short Film Festival is one of the largest international short film festivals in the Baltic countries and the only short film festival in Lithuania. Founded in 2006, it has become “a unique platform in Lithuania, screening global short films made by both emerging and established talents”, according to the press release.

Each year, the festival presents around twenty short film programmes, featuring over 100 short films.

The 18th edition of the Vilnius Short Film Festival will take place from January 15 to 21, 2025.
