An autonomous bus has hit the streets of Vilnius and will be tested in the Užupis district for several months.
“Vilnius is becoming an innovation leader in Lithuania by introducing autonomous public transport. This is a step that will help shape safer and more efficient traffic in the city, and in the future may also partially address the driver shortage,” said Adomas Bužinskas, director of the Vilnius City Municipality Administration.
“The information gathered during the testing will serve as a basis for assessing the potential of autonomous vehicles in Vilnius’ public transport system,” he added.
The self-driving bus will run in Užupis on weekdays from 7:00 to 19:00. The four-kilometre route will take approximately 50 minutes and the bus will stop at 13 stops, 11 of which were installed especially for the testing of the autonomous bus.

The electric autonomous bus will be free of charge during the test period. It will be able to carry six passengers at a time, but no bicycles or scooters will be allowed due to limited space.
During the testing, information on passenger flows in Užupis, the quality of the infrastructure and its suitability for self-driving transport will be collected and analysed.
