Lithuania’s Seimas elections: 15 party lists and 1,740 candidates register to run

Lithuania’s Central Electoral Commission (VRK) has finished registration for October’s general election. In all, 1,740 candidates will be running for seats in the parliament, Seimas, the commission’s spokeswoman Indrė Ramanavičienė said on Thursday.

“They include eight mayors, four MEPs and 128 current members of the Seimas,” she told BNS.

Half of the seats in the 141-member parliament will be allocated to party lists that will clear the 5-percent threshold.

Fifteen lists have been registered to run for seats:

  • Democrats “For Lithuania
  • The Freedom Party
  • The Liberal Movement
  • The Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania – Christian Families Alliance (LLRA-KŠS)
  • The Lithuanian People’s Party
  • The Lithuanian Regions Party
  • The Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP)
  • The Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union (LVŽS)
  • The Lithuanian Green Party
  • The National Alliance
  • The Freedom and Justice Party
  • The Dawn of the Nemunas party
  • The Peace Coalition (of the Labour Party, the Christian Democratic Party of Lithuania, the Samogitian Party)
  • The People and Justice Union (centrists, nationalists),
  • The Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD)

Additionally, 700 politicians will vie for seats in 71 single-mandate constituencies.

Candidates, lists of candidates and information about them will be published on the VRK website on Friday.

For the 2020 general elections, the VRK registered 1,754 candidates, compared to 1,415 in 2016.

The Seimas elections will take place on October 13. Runoffs in single-member constituencies (where no one candidate will win a majority) will follow two weeks later.
