Life expectancy in Lithuania highest since 1958, still below EU average

The average life expectancy in Lithuania in 2023 was the highest since 1958, when records began, standing at 77.43 years, official statistics show.

Health Minister Aurimas Pečkauskas says the indicator is “very complex” and it is impossible to single out a single factor for the increase.

“But it appears that it has to do with the improving financing of the healthcare system, and [...] increasing physical activity, a drop in the consumption of harmful substances, like cigarettes and alcohol, and changing attitudes towards nutrition. All of these factors have a real impact,” the minister told BNS.

“I believe that result should continue improving in the future,” he added.

The lowest average life expectancy, at 68.57 years, was in 1994, according to the State Data Agency.

Compared to 1958 (69.4 years), the average life expectancy in Lithuania in 2023 increased by about eight years. However, the country still lags behind the EU average of 81.5 years in 2023.
