One person dead after car crashed into river in Vilnius

A car crashed into the Neris River in Vilnius on Thursday morning with a person inside.

Edita Zdanevičienė, a spokeswoman for the Fire and Rescue Department, said that firefighters received a report about a car that had driven into the river at 10:36.

The car was spotted near the bridge on Oslo Street, heading towards Gariūnai.

“The car was found in the Neris River near the Oslo Street bridge, [...] the car was submerged in water, the body of one person was seen in the car’s interior, and the visibility in the water is very poor,” Zdanevičienė told BNS.

Zdanevičienė later confirmed that the car was brought to the shore at 14:48.

“When the car was lifted, there was a man’s body inside. […] According to initial information, he was about 30 years old,” she said.

The circumstances of the accident are under investigation.
