Nausėda to be sworn in for second term as Lithuanian president – what you need to know

On Friday, Gitanas Nausėda will be inaugurated as Lithuanian president for the second term. Here’s what you need to know. 

As usual, the presidential inauguration takes place in Lithuania on July 12. Nausėda will once again take the oath of office for the five-year term.

The first part of the inauguration will take place at 12:00 at the Lithuanian parliament Seimas, where Nausėda will be sworn in by the president of the Constitutional Court.

Representatives of foreign diplomatic corps are expected to attend the inauguration at the Seimas. Archbishop Metropolitan Gintaras Grušas, former Presidents Dalia Grybauskaitė and Valdas Adamkus, as well as Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, will also attend the ceremony.

After the inauguration at the Seimas, the ceremony will move to the Vilnius Cathedral, where Mass will be celebrated at 13:00.

Nausėda will be greeted in the Cathedral Square by a procession of flags and troops. Here, the president, as the commander-in-chief, will be introduced to the commanders of the Armed Forces.

The president and First Lady Diana Nausėdienė will then proceed to Daukantas Square. The presidential flag, which has been flying over the Presidential Palace for the last five years, will be lowered and replaced by the flag of the 2024–2029 term of office. After the flag hoisting, Nausėda will address the people of Lithuania.

After the speech, the president and the first lady will proceed to the Presidential Palace, where Prime Minister Šimonytė will return the powers of the government to the president

A reception to mark the inauguration of Nausėda’s second term of office will be held in the courtyard of the Presidential Palace at 19:00. Around 2,000 guests have been invited to the final part of the inauguration.

The Vilnius City Municipality informs that traffic restrictions are planned in Vilnius Old Town during the presidential inauguration. There will also be temporary changes to public transport routes.
