Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Poland have asked the European Union to build a defence line along the bloc’s 700-kilometre border with Russia and Belarus, reports the Kyiv Independent newspaper.
The leaders of the four countries have drafted a letter to the EU president outlining the proposal and its cost and asking for other member states’ financial and political support.
“The creation of a system of defence infrastructure along the external border of the EU with Russia and Belarus will meet the acute and urgent need to protect the EU from military and hybrid threats,” the Kyiv Independent quotes the letter.
The defence line would also meet NATO’s military requirements, according to the letter.
According to the Kyiv Independent, EU officials estimate the cost of the 700-kilometre defence line to be around 2.5 billion euros.
