Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has officially proposed dismissing General Valdemaras Rupšys as the country’s chief of defence once his term expires and nominated Brigadier General Raimundas Vaikšnoras as his replacement.

Under the president’s proposal, Rupšys would be dismissed as of July 23, and Vaikšnoras would assume office on July 24.

According to the constitution, the president appoints and dismisses the chief of defence with the parliament’s approval. In Lithuania, the chief of defence is appointed for five years.

Vaikšnoras is currently serving as deputy chief of staff for military training at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE).

He has in the past served as commander of the Lithuanian Land Force, the force’s deputy chief of staff for operations, chief of the Operations Department of the Defence Staff, and commander of the Iron Wolf brigade.
