A tunnel was discovered underneath Konstitucijos Avenue in Vilnius. The city’s mayor says it may be adapted for use as an underpass.
“Even though we seem to know Vilnius really well, sometimes unique discoveries can be right under our noses,” Mayor Valdas Benkunskas wrote on Facebook.
The authorities noticed in old maps an underground passage marked near the National Gallery, on the right bank of the river Neris.
“After thoroughly investigating the area, we were convinced that there was indeed a tunnel. It didn’t take us long to open an entrance through a manhole and the team and I went on a real treasure hunt – we descended through the manhole into the underground tunnel. Although we didn’t find any gold, we can see the potential of the tunnel,” Benkunskas posted.
Experts are still examining the passage, according to the mayor, but the authorities consider turning it into a usable underpass to cross Konstitucijos Avenue.
“The city needs such a link, and building it not from scratch would make it significantly quicker and cheaper,” Benkunskas said.
