Latest rankings list best schools and universities in Lithuania

Vilnius University and Vilnius Lyceum stand at the top in the latest rankings of Lithuania’s universities and gymnasiums.

Meanwhile, Vilnius and Kaunas colleges lead among colleges.

This was announced on Wednesday by the Reitingai magazine, which annually tabulates educational institutions.

Little change at the top

Three Kaunas and one Vilnius higher education institutions continue to rank in the top five. The Lithuanian University of Health Sciences in Kaunas is ranks second. Kaunas University of Technology has moved up one spot to the third place, swapping positions with Vytautas Magnus University, another Kaunas-based institution.

Vilnius TECH University ranks fifth, same spot as last year.

“The Lithuanian University of Health Sciences is the first among state universities in terms of added value created by alumni and evaluated by employers,” the report in the Reitingai magazine says.

Among private universities, ISM University of Management and Economics has traditionally been the leader, with Kazimieras Simonavičius University in second place. This year, LCC International University is in third place.

Universities were assessed on 35 different parameters, grouped into five criteria. The rankings focus on employers’ evaluations, students and studies, scientific, artistic or sporting activities, and staff performance.

According to the magazine, the employability of many graduates nine months after graduation has improved considerably.

“The proportion of graduates from the 2023 batch of most universities who have not found a job nine months after graduation is below one percent,” the report says.

Secondary schools

Among the gymnasiums with entrance exams, Vilnius Lyceum, KTU gymnasium (Kaunas), Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Gymnasium (Kaunas), and Vilnius Jesuit gymnasium top the rankings. The positions of these gymnasiums have not changed since last year.

Meanwhile, Klaipėda’s Ąžuolynas Gymnasium is in fifth place this year, pushing out Vilnius Biržiška Gymnasium from the top five.

Among the schools without entrance exams, Klaipėda Lyceum ranks first, followed by Panevėžys Balčikonis Gymnasium. The following are the Saulė Private Gymnasium, Kaunas Saulė Gymnasium, and Telšiai Žemaitė Gymnasium.

The gymnasium rankings are based on the results of last year’s graduation exams. Extra points were awarded to gymnasiums where all graduates passed both the Lithuanian language and Maths exams.

Kids in big cities perform better

Among colleges, Vilnius College and Kaunas College are the leaders, as they were last year, with Kaunas Technical College in third place and Vilnius College of Technology and Design in fourth place.

The Lithuanian Maritime University in Klaipėda rounds off the top five.

Vilnius, Kaunas, Palanga, Šiauliai and Kaišiadorys are the leaders in terms of school student achievement.

The lowest performers are Pagėgiai, Kazlų Ruda, Ignalina, Rietavas, and Kalvarija.
