A member of the United States contingent in Lithuania died in the line of duty on 27 March, the Lithuanian Armed Forces reported on Friday.
“The Lithuanian Armed Forces leadership expresses its deepest condolences to the soldier’s relatives and service comrades following the death of a member of the United States contingent stationed in Lithuania on March 27 at the General Silvestras Žukauskas training ground,” the statement said.
An investigation has been launched to establish the circumstances of the incident, which is being conducted by the US law enforcement and the Military Police of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, under the guidance of the Vilnius District Prosecutor’s Office.
The US Embassy in Lithuania confirmed the death of the soldier on Friday, but did not comment on the circumstances of the incident.
“We express our sincere condolences to the family for their loss,” it said.
The Pentagon should be contacted for further information, it added.
The US has deployed a battalion battle group in Lithuania.
