Lithuanian seniors to try out speed dating on Valentine’s Day

Lithuanian seniors in four cities are invited to celebrate Valentine’s Day at speed dating events organised by an NGO.

The afternoon events, complete with free coffee, are taking place in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, and Panevėžys on Wednesday.

The campaign, titled Seniors Go on a Date, is aimed at giving senior citizens an occasion to socialise and make new friends, the organiser, National Institute for Social Integration, said.

Programme manager Rugilė Bitautaitė says that the initiative is intended to encourage not only romantic encounters for seniors but also help them spend time with relatives, friends, or neighbours.

“The aim is to inspire seniors themselves to invite a long-lost friend, neighbour, or former colleague out on a date more often. We want to encourage elderly neighbours to arrange a date at one of their homes, or a granddaughter to take her grandfather out on a date. After all, a date can be a great opportunity to dress up, cheer yourself up and, most importantly, create lovely moments with the people around you,” says Bitautaitė.
