Belarusian opposition vows to correct Lithuania border error in new passports

The Belarusian opposition has vowed to eliminate map errors in its alternative passports as they now incorrectly show the border between Lithuania and Belarus, the office of opposition leader Sviatlana Tikhanovskaya said on Tuesday.

As photos of new passports being made by the Belarusian opposition and incorrectly showing the Belarusian-Lithuanian border have recently started circulating online, Tikhanovskaya’s office called it a “technical error” and said it would be corrected.

According to Valery Kavalevski, Tikhanovskaya’s representative on foreign affairs who is responsible for the passport project, the official passport design has not yet been approved.

“Thank you for highlighting this error – it will be corrected. The design has not yet been officially approved. We are committed to respecting the sovereignty, independence, and inviolable territorial integrity of Lithuania,” Tikhanovskaya’s office said in a statement.

The Belarusian opposition announced plans to create new documents for its citizens in the fall of 2023. The alternative Belarusian passport will use the Pahonia symbol, the Belarusian equivalent of the Lithuanian coat of arms called Vytis.

The Belarussian opposition started designing new passports after Belarus decided last year to no longer renew documents of citizens permanently residing abroad at its diplomatic missions.
