Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday arrived in the exclave of Kaliningrad, which borders Lithuania and Poland, Russian state media RIA Novosti has reported.
According to Putin’s spokesperson, however, his trip to Kaliningrad is part of his work and does not send a message to the NATO countries.
“When the president visits the regions of the Russian Federation, it is not a message to NATO countries. This is the main thing that the president does. The most important thing is not to send messages, but to do what he has been doing for many years – working on the development of our country and our regions,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told RIA Novosti.
It was previously announced that Putin would visit Kaliningrad on Thursday, where he would meet the students at Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University, as well as local officials.
According to Peskov, Moscow did not request a direct air corridor through Europe for Putin’s flight to Kaliningrad.
Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave was in danger because of the militaristic talk in the Baltic states, the Kremlin spokesperson said.
Putin last visited Kaliningrad in September 2022.
