Lithuanian cities increasingly turn to real Christmas trees

Lithuanian cities are actively preparing for Christmas. This year, more cities and towns in the country are choosing real Christmas trees over fake ones.

This year, real Christmas trees will be lit in all of Lithuanian main cities, including Šiauliai, Alytus, Panevėžys, Klaipėda and Vilnius.

Kaunas was the first Lithuanian city to light its Christmas tree last Saturday. With less than a month to go to Christmas, other cities are also preparing to light their main decorations.

In Klaipėda, the city’s main Christmas tree has been donated by residents for the ninth year in a row.

“I bought it in 2000 in a pot. I gave it to my mother. It was about 2-3, maybe 4 years old at the time. So, it’s 26-27 years old ow,” says Arūnas Bentas, who donated the 12-metre-tall tree to Klaipėda.

The Christmas tree in Klaipėda’s Theatre Square will be decorated with around three kilometres of lights.

After an eight-year break, the central square of Šiauliai will also be decorated with a real 13-metre-tall spruce tree.

“We are returning to the idea of sustainability so that we can enjoy the real thing, the real tree,” says Deimantė Bačiulė, head of the Šiauliai Cultural Centre.

The Šiauliai Christmas tree will be decorated with over two kilometres of lights and gold and silver decorations. According to Bačiulė, the real tree is cheaper, while the same decorations will be used next year.

In Alytus, two Christmas trees will be lit this year. The first one is a frame tree with last year’s toys. The second is a 12-metre-tall real spruce in the Town Hall Square, donated by a resident.

The Alytus, Vilnius, and Panevėžys Christmas trees will be lit on Friday. In Šiauliai and Klaipėda, the tree lighting events will take place on Saturday.
