Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda met with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on the sidelines of an informal EU summit in Granada, Spain, and called on him to step up cooperation on Ukrainian grain exports, making maximum use of the Lithuanian Port of Klaipėda capacity.

The two leaders discussed regional security, assistance for Ukraine, and grain exports via Baltic Sea ports, the presidential press service said.

Nausėda stressed that a more active use of this export route would make a significant contribution to tackling the global food crisis caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine.

According to the Lithuanian president, it is necessary to remove bottlenecks in the transport infrastructure and to increase the throughput of the Baltic Sea ports in order to speed up grain exports.

On Tuesday, the Lithuanian, Polish and Ukrainian agriculture ministers agreed that checks of Ukrainian grain in transit through Poland to third countries would be moved from the Ukrainian-Polish border to the Lithuanian Port of Klaipėda.
