Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda on Tuesday met with the country’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom Eitvydas Bajarūnas, who has been accused of misconduct, and asked him to resume his work, a presidential adviser has said.
“The president met with the ambassador yesterday [on Tuesday], heard his position, and asked him to return to London to continue working,” Frederikas Jansonas, who leads the president’s communication group, told LRT TV on Wednesday.
In his words, the fact that information about abuse in the London Embassy was leaked to the media “suggests from the very first steps that there are indeed elements of a political game”.
“There is a certain attempt to shape public opinion, but we are talking about ambassadors, we are talking about people who work for the state, and, frankly, they do not deserve to be treated like this,” the adviser said.
His comment came after inspectors from Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry found that Bajarūnas abuses his authority and inappropriately communicates with his staff.

The inspectors recommend evaluating Bajarūnas’ conduct and suitability to head the embassy, the delfi.lt news website reported on Tuesday.
For his part, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said the institutions responsible for foreign policy would hold consultations on whether Bajarūnas could remain in his position.
Also speaking on Wednesday, Bajarūnas said he had become an instrument in a political fight.
