Lithuania is sending 20 border guards to Latvia to assist the neighbouring country which is facing record migrant flows, Deputy Interior Minister Arnoldas Abramavičius told BNS on Monday.
Latvia reported 256 border crossing attempts on Sunday, the highest number ever. The numbers of attempted irregular border crossing on Lithuania’s border with Belarus have been dwindling.
This year, Lithuania recorded around 1,600 irregular crossing attempts. Some 11,200 migrants were turned away in 2022, with a total of 20,900 people since August 3, 2021, when Lithuania adopted the policy of so-called pushbacks. This includes repeated attempts by the same people to cross the border.
