Large fire rips through recycling plant in Vilnius

BNS 2023.08.07 11:39

Firefighters remain in the territory of Ecoservice, a waste recycling company, near Gariūnai in Vilnius, where a large fire broke out on Saturday.

"Six fire engines remain at the scene, extinguishing any emerging minor fires," Giedrius
Vaičius of the Fire and Rescue Department told BNS on Monday morning.

The fire broke out in the company's territory near the Gariūnai marketplace on Saturday morning. It was localised on Saturday night, but firefighters have been working at the site for the past two days.

It will take time to completely extinguish the fire due to a large area, Vidas Kerševičius, chief of the Vilnius Fire Rescue Board, told a press conference at the scene.

Mindaugas Šeštokas, head of Ecoservice's Production Division, said on Saturday that non-hazardous waste had caught fire in the company's sorting centre, adding that the company has launched an internal investigation into the incident.

Surrounding streets were closed due to the fire, with large plumes of black smoke drifting over parts of the Lithuanian capital.

Experts worked at the scene and said that the extent of the pollution and the environmental damage would become clear after investigations.
