Lithuanians want sex offender register, poll suggests

The majority of Lithuanians believe that the country should have a register of sex offenders, according to a Baltijos Tyrimai opinion poll commissioned by LRT.

According to the poll – which asked about a register of sex offenders against children – 91 percent of Lithuanians aged 18 and older think that the register should be established, with 58.4 percent of the polled being strongly in favour of the register and 32.9 percent somewhat in favour.

Four percent of the respondents disagree – 1 percent strongly and 3 percent somewhat – that there is a need for such a register in Lithuania.

Five percent of the polled did not have an opinion on this issue.

In May, a group of MPs registered a bill on the register of sexual offences. The purpose, they claim, is to better control people suspected or convicted of sexual offences in order to prevent new offences.

According to the bill, the register would consist of a part that is public and another one that is restricted.

Baltijos Tyrimai conducted the representative survey, commissioned by LRT, between June 14 and 29, polling 1,020 people.

The results of the poll have an error margin of up to 3.1 percent.
