Lithuanian energy facilities to be protected from drones

BNS 2023.07.10 11:27

Lithuania's electricity and gas transmission system operators Litgrid and Amber Grid are planning to purchase systems capable of detecting and neutralising unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and install them at 19 energy facilities.

The systems are expected to be operational in 2024, according to Litgrid's spokesperson Matas Noreika.

"In light of the rapid development of UAV technology, [...] we are assessing the risks and looking at ways to adequately protect the energy infrastructure, which is classified as critical infrastructure for national security, from deliberate or negligent actions with unmanned aircraft," he told BNS.

The public procurement documents show that the systems are planned to be installed in 15 electricity infrastructure and four gas infrastructure facilities.
