Lithuanian Defence Minister Arvydas Anušauskas, who is in Ukraine right now, has briefed his Ukrainian counterpart Oleksii Reznikov on Lithuania’s long-term plan to support the Ukrainian army and informed him about the latest support package.
“We do understand that only long-term military and financial support to Ukraine will bring stability to a free Europe. That is why we have prepared a three-year plan to support Ukraine’s army,” Anušauskas was quoted as saying in a statement released by the Defence Ministry on Friday.
In his words, the three main objectives are: to make every effort to ensure the continued provision of military support to the Ukrainian army; to provide rehabilitation for wounded Ukrainian soldiers; to continue consultations on defence reforms initiated before the war to bring Ukraine closer to NATO membership.
Anušauskas also confirmed that Lithuania’s latest support package includes NASAMS missile launchers that will be delivered to Ukraine in the fall. It will also include ten M113 armoured personnel carriers, grenade launcher ammunition, and 2.5 million rounds of ammunition, with the latter being shipped to Ukraine as early as this week.
The Lithuanian and Ukrainian defence ministers also discussed preparations for the forthcoming NATO summit in Vilnius and Ukraine’s progress in reforming its military training system, the statement reads.
The Lithuanian Defence Ministry points out that the total value of Lithuanian military assistance to Ukraine since the start of the war is set to reach half a billion euros soon.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda visited Kyiv on Wednesday when he said Lithuania is buying two NASAMS launchers for Ukraine.
