Fourteen among Lithuania’s 60 municipalities have placed restrictions or bans on visiting forests due to the ongoing drought, with the city of Vilnius being added to the list on Friday, the State Forest Enterprise informed.
“There is no good news yet, only one more municipality has been added, because yesterday there were 13 municipalities with a ban on forest visits, and now there are 14,” Forestry Service spokeswoman Iveta Janušauskaitė told BNS on Friday.
Foresters and firefighters are asking Vilnius residents to temporarily stay away from the Nemenčinė forest, which has a class 5 forest fire rating.
The municipalities of Akmenė, Biržai, Jurbarkas, Kalvarija, Kazlų Ruda, Klaipėda District, Mažeikiai, Šilutė, Pagėgiai, Pasvalys, Marijampolė, Vilkaviškis, Vilnius District and Vilnius City have temporarily banned or restricted visits of individuals to forests.
Due to the drought, forest fires are at their highest level.
