Lithuania to reinstate checks on borders with Poland, Latvia for NATO summit

BNS 2023.05.31 11:51

Lithuania will reinstate internal Schengen border controls before, during, and after the NATO summit in Vilnius.

The controls will be in place from 8:00 on July 7 to 8:00 on July 13, according to a draft government resolution registered by the Interior Ministry on Wednesday.

The measure will apply at Lithuania's border checkpoints with Latvia and Poland, as well as at its airports and seaports.

The Lithuanian Armed Forces have said they are planning to deploy over 3,000 troops to help ensure security during the summit.

Together with allies, they will provide air defence, protection of critical sites, important routes and VIPs, as well as conduct checks of accommodation and vehicles, and inspect buildings and facilities for explosives.

Recently, Germany said it will deploy a Patriot long-range air defence system to Lithuania during the summit.
