A monument to Lithuanians and Ukrainians who were imprisoned in the post-war camps in Balkhash and East Kounrad will be unveiled in Kazakhstan.
The monument has been erected on the site of the former solitary confinement cells of the Balkhash camp, the Genocide and Resistance Research Centre of Lithuania says.
The unveiling ceremony is scheduled for May 31, the day of commemoration of the victims of totalitarianism in Kazakhstan.
The monument honours the memory of prisoners of the camps in Balkhash and East Kounrad in 1948–1955.
The monument has been erected at the expense of the Genocide and Resistance Research Centre of Lithuania, implementing the idea of architect Algis Vyšniūnas, a senior adviser to the centre’s director general.
