Lithuania is protesting against Belarus’ decision to close down Gimtinė (Motherland), an association of ethnic Lithuanians that has been operating in the village of Pelesa for more than 20 years.
Lithuania's Foreign Ministry said it had summoned a diplomat from Belarus' embassy in Vilnius to hand them "a strong protest note".
On April 28, a Grodno regional court is scheduled to hold a hearing on the liquidation of the organisation, according to the ministry.
The note says that "such actions by Belarus will be met with a strict and principled response, and that Lithuania will raise this issue before international institutions", according to a press release by the ministry.
