The Embassy of India has started its operations in Lithuania, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar announced on Friday.
“Delighted to share that the Embassy of India, Vilnius has started operations today. Our resident mission will further strengthen the India-Lithuania partnership,” he wrote on Twitter.
For his part, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis stressed that Vilnius sees India “as a very important partner”.
“We welcome and congratulate this decision. India is the world’s largest democracy and an important economic partner of Lithuania,” Landsbergis said in a comment sent to BNS.
“I believe that the opening of the embassy will help to step up the development of not only political but also economic relations,” he added.
New Delhi has long been trying to navigate its relations with the West and Moscow, with the latter supplying most of India’s arms. However, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is making it difficult to maintain this balance.
India has not openly condemned the Kremlin and did not back the UN Security Council resolution condemning Moscow’s aggression.
