Latvia asks people to leave seals alone

Latvian authorities have asked people to not harass seal pups this season, the country’s public broadcaster LSM reports.

"You should keep your distance, don't cause unnecessary stress. And definitely don't touch them or move them yourself," Elīna Ezeriņa, a representative of the Nature Protection Board (DAP), told Latvian Radio.

Seals arrive in different parts of the Baltic coastline every year. They are also often spotted on Lithuania’s beaches.

The baby seals spend time ashore to rest and warm up, therefore, they should not be scared off to go back into the water.

Dogs should also be kept on a leash. "You have to protect both the seals and your dogs," added Ezeriņa.
