Around 600 troops from the German brigade assigned to Lithuania are set to arrive in Lithuania this week to take part in the first exercise of the year, the Lithuanian Armed Forces said on Monday.
Some 600 soldiers of the German army’s 41st Mechanised Infantry Brigade, led by Brigadier General Christian Nawrat, and about 240 pieces of military equipment will arrive in Lithuania by land, air, and sea from February 20 to 27.
After combat training in Germany, the brigade units will take part in the Griffin Lightning joint exercise with the Lithuanian troops from February 28 to March 10.
The Germans will train with the Grand Duchess Birutė Uhlan Battalion. The exercise will include training in planning joint operations, redeployment of forces, joint combat tasks during field tactics exercises, and live-fire exercises.
The German Army’s 41st Mechanised Infantry Brigade’s Forward Command element has been permanently deployed in Lithuania since September 4, 2022.
Vilnius wants to have a full German brigade permanently deployed in Lithuania. German officials, however, have publicly reiterated that the brigade will be partially deployed in Lithuania, while the remainder of it will be based in Germany and will be ready for swift redeployment, if necessary.
