Lithuanian Interior Minister Agnė Bilotaitė believes that the existing state of emergency in the country should be extended beyond next month when it is set to expire.
“In light of what is happening, we, as the Interior Ministry, do see grounds for extending the state of emergency, which [...] is set to expire on December 15,” she told reporters after Wednesday’s inter-institutional meeting on the security situation in the region following Tuesday’s missile strikes in Ukraine and Poland.
The state of emergency was introduced in Lithuania on February 24, after Russia launched its war against Ukraine, and has been extended twice already.
Since September, however, the state of emergency only applies to regions alongside the Russian and Belarusian border and at border checkpoints. It allowed Vilnius to ban Russian nationals with tourist visas from entering the country.
Bilotaitė said on Wednesday that her ministry might suggest additional measures along with its proposal to extend the state of emergency, but she gave no details.
