Rimantas Šidlauskas, a former Lithuanian ambassador to Canada and Russia, died at the age of 60 on Monday, the Foreign Ministry has confirmed to BNS.
Last March, a court found Šidlauskas guilty of influence peddling and fined him 16,500 euros. He was also banned from holding senior positions in the public and private sectors for five years.
According to the pre-trial investigation, Šidlauskas, who then served as director general of the Association of Lithuanian Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Crafts, directly demanded and agreed to take a bribe of 10,000 euros from the now-deceased businessman Albinas Bieliauskas, and Rinat Nasirov, a Russian banker, for help in obtaining visas.
