The Lithuanian government on Wednesday nominated Eitvydas Bajarūnas as the country’s ambassador to the United Kingdom.
If his appointment is approved by President Gitanas Nausėda, the diplomat will take up the post on September 12.
Bajarūnas noted that the Lithuanian diaspora in the UK numbers over 200,000, which equals the population of the port city of Klaipėda and pledged to make the embassy in London “even more open to Lithuanians”.
“The [Foreign] Ministry has recently approved a long-term strategy for the Lithuanian diaspora for 2022-2024, and this will become my most important document on how to engage Lithuanians,” the diplomat told the cabinet.
Other important tasks include continuing to protect Lithuanian citizens’ interests post-Brexit and further bolstering diplomatic and trade ties with the country that has left the European Union, according to Bajarūnas.
He underlined the UK’s global role, especially in seeking political and military support for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.
Bajarūnas was recalled as Lithuania’s ambassador to Russia in May. He has also served as the country’s ambassador to Uzbekistan until now.
