Jewish tombstones used to build steps on Tauro Hill in Vilnius during the Soviet occupation will be returned to the cemetery, the municipality said in a press release on Monday.

In 1961, the Soviet authorities decided to liquidate the old Jewish cemetery in Užupis. The tombstones were then used in construction, including on Tauro Hill, the municipality said.

New steps will be built as part of the concert hall project.

According to the municipality, over 1,000 tonnes of tombstone fragments, located in various parts of the city, have already been preserved at the Old Jewish Cemetery in Užupis.

Some tombstones still form structural parts of various buildings, including the Vilnius City Clinical Hospital. The locations have been marked with information boards.
