This summer, eight Lithuanian beaches will fly the Blue Flags as symbols of a clean and safe environment.

The decision to award the eight beaches was made by the international Blue Flag Council Commission set up by the Copenhagen-based Foundation for Environmental Education, the Association of Lithuanian Municipalities said on Monday.

Blue Flags will fly this year on six Baltic Sea Beaches in Nida, Juodkrantė, Preila Smiltynė, Melnragė, Palanga as well as the Balsys and Žirmūnai beaches in Vilnius.

There are over 4,000 beaches in 50 countries that have been awarded the internationally-recognised quality sign, which is based on criteria for environmental protection, water quality, safety, and accessibility.

Lithuania joined the programme in 2001.
