Lithuania to further loosen pandemic restrictions – PM

LRT RADIJAS, BNS 2022.02.15 13:09

The Lithuanian government is planning to further ease coronavirus pandemic restrictions, according to Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė.

“I believe there should be fewer restrictions, unless something unforeseen happens, say, a new mutation suddenly emerges somewhere in the world,” she told LRT RADIO on Tuesday.

Health Minister Arūnas Dulkys commented on Monday that the pandemic in Lithuania passed its peak.

Šimonytė said she agreed with this assessment, adding, however, that the situation was still complicated.

“We are probably past the peak of [the number of new] infections, but on other fronts, the situation is more complex because the occupancy of ICU beds is not yet falling significantly, and the occupancy of simple hospital beds is increasing,” she said.

The rising number of infections among older people signals that the coronavirus death toll is likely to rise in the coming weeks, according to the prime minister.

On Monday, the government decided to scrap pandemic-related document checks for arrivals from EU countries.

It also lifted additional testing requirements for unvaccinated travelers from EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican.

Travellers from any country of the world are no longer required to self-isolate on arrival in Lithuania as of Monday.
