Irregular crossings down on Lithuania-Belarus border, more migrants attempt to enter Latvia

BNS 2021.12.17 11:02

Lithuanian border guards recorded no attempts to cross the border from Belarus three days in a row, the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) said on Friday morning.

This marks the fifth time since early August, when border guards were instructed to keep irregular migrants out, that not a single person has been turned back to Belarus.

However, the VSAT noted an increase in attempted crossings from Belarus into Latvia.

Latvian border guards turned away 60 migrants on Thursday, 69 on Wednesday, 83 on Tuesday and 56 on Monday, up from the usual daily number of 20 to 30 previously, according to the press release.

The VSAT said Lithuanian border guards and soldiers assisting them had not used their service guns in the past 24 hours.

Reinforced controls remain in place on the Lithuanian side of the border.

Lithuanian border guards say they have denied entry to almost 8,000 migrants since early August.

More than 4,200 irregular migrants have crossed into Lithuania from Belarus over the summer. Lithuania accuses the Belarusian government of orchestrating migrant smuggling, calling it “hybrid aggression”.
