The Lithuanian parliament has passed new legislation to make more people eligible for heating subsidies in an effort to cushion low-income households against an expected surge in heating bills.

The parliament, Seimas, adopted the amendments to the Law on Cash Social Assistance for Low-Income Families on Tuesday, with 117 votes in favour, none against and one abstention.

Currently, 95,000 people can apply for subsidies to cover part of their heating costs, with 14 million euros in budget funds allocated for the purpose annually.

Tuesday's amendments will increase the number of eligible households by 15,000.
