On Tuesday, Lithuanian Defence Minister Arvydas Anušauskas met with NATO’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who pledged the alliance’s support in case of an escalation at the border with Belarus.

“He assured [me] that, if the situation would change radically, there would be support from NATO,” Anušauskas told reporters in Brussels.

He did not provide more details on the support offered, saying they did not discuss it. Even if they did, such information would not be made public, Anušauskas added.

On Sunday, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said he was consulting with Lithuania and Latvia whether to activate NATO’s Article 4, which calls for consultations among allies.

Poland has seen a sharp escalation on its border with Belarus, where Alexander Lukashenko has orchestrated a migration influx in an attempt to pressure the European Union.

Brussels, the Baltic states, and Poland call it “hybrid aggression”.
