Fears of Covid infection spike as Lithuanian students return to schools

Lithuanian school students are returning to classrooms on Wednesday after an extended autumn break, with the National Public Health Centre expecting a spike in coronavirus infections.

The Education, Science and Sport Ministry says students were advised to self-test before returning to school.

Giedrė Aleksienė of the National Public Health Centre says the situation in Lithuania's schools “remains tense, just like the general epidemiological situation in the country”.

Although the number of active clusters in schools went down slightly last week, educational facilities are still the main source of new cases as outbreaks in schools and kindergartens account for around two thirds of all clusters which currently number at around 1,000.
