Lithuanian health minister: vaccine is the only way to beat the pandemic

BNS 2021.10.11 10:15

On Friday, Lithuanian Health Minister Arūnas Dulkys said he has the support of Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, adding that vaccination is the only way to bring the coronavirus pandemic under control.

"The way to a breakthrough is simple: everyone should continue to get vaccinated," he told reporters. "I feel that the prime minister has confidence in me, and I am focused on my work."

The comment came after President Gitanas Nausėda said earlier on Friday that Dulkys must come up with solutions on how to manage the coronavirus pandemic or he has to step down.

According to the minister, the government has adopted "additional significant decisions that are necessary to encourage immunisation" and submitted them to the parliament for approval.

"We are working intensively in this direction every day," he said.

Last week, the cabinet approved proposals to require unvaccinated workers in certain areas to pay for their Covid-19 tests and to offer a one-off payment of 100 euros to newly vaccinated seniors aged 75 years and over and those who take their booster shots.

The draft legislative amendments are yet to be endorsed by the parliament.
