Vydas Gedvilas has been elected as the new president of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation.
He will replace Arvydas Sabonis who has led the federation for two terms.
Gedvilas served three terms as a member of the Lithuanian Parliament between 2004 and 2016, including a short stint as parliamentary speaker. He was a member of the Labour Party until 2018.
Before turning to politics, Gedvilas, 62, had coached the Lithuanian national basketball team.
He vied for the position at the Basketball Federation with two other contenders: Robertas Javtokas and Ramūnas Butautas.

Gedvilas garnered 77 out of 136 votes in a secret ballot, securing a strong lead against both Butautas and Javtokas with 31 votes and 28 votes, respectively.
Sabonis led the federation since October 2011, when he succeeded Vladas Garastas who had been its president since 2003.
