The European Commission has allocated 37 million euros in financial aid to Lithuania in order to help the country deal with an influx of irregular migrants, according to the Interior Ministry.

The decision was made after an EC delegation visited Lithuania on Monday and Tuesday.

“This assistance will be used to meet the needs related to migrant acceptance and detention infrastructure, asylum procedures, safe and dignified living conditions, key services for illegal migrants, protection of the places where they are accommodated, as well as crisis-time communication and the dissemination of information,” the ministry said.

The Lithuanian government and the EC also agreed “to continue looking for ways to fund border surveillance systems”, it added.

According to the ministry, 4,112 irregular migrants have crossed the Lithuanian-Belarusian border this year.
