Coronavirus: Lithuania reports highest daily death toll so far, 1,432 new infections

Lithuania registered 1,432 new coronavirus infections and another 38 deaths from Covid-19 over the past 24 hours, the country's statistics office said on Tuesday morning.

The daily death count is the highest the country has reported since the start of the pandemic.

Most of the deceased, 17, were in their 80s, according to the statistics office. Four people were in their 50s and four more in their 60s.

Moreover, 2,591 people were confirmed as having recovered from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours.

A total of 96,452 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Lithuania so far. The country currently has 53,501 active cases and 41,665 recoveries.

The coronavirus death toll has now reached 863, and 423 infected people have died of other causes, according to the statistics office.

Lithuania tested 8,377 people for the coronavirus on Monday.

At the moment, 2,372 coronavirus patients are being treated in the country's hospitals, 180 of them in intensive care.

According to the statistics office, about half of the 16,560 hospital beds in the country are currently occupied.

The Lithuanian government has announced a national lockdown to come into effect on Wednesday.
