Nigerian football player Obi Jeremiah Chinonso was injured in a knife attack in the southern Lithuanian city of Alytus. Although the attack’s motives are not yet disclosed, the Lithuanian Football Federation (LFF) has condemned racism in a statement following the incident.

“The footballer is being transported to Kaunas. He underwent surgery in Alytus, and now he will likely need additional specialist care. He is currently under anaesthesia, not yet fully recovered, but he is able to speak,” said Dainava club director Žydrūnas Lukošiūnas.

The incident occurred as the Alytus team was preparing to travel to Tauragė, where a First League match against local side Tauras was scheduled for Tuesday evening.

According to preliminary information, the victim was immediately taken to Alytus Hospital, and a suspect has been detained.

The Lithuanian Football Federation (LFF) condemned the incident.

“Racism has no place in football or in society. Every player, regardless of nationality, skin colour or origin, must feel safe,” LFF president Edgaras Stankevičius said on Tuesday.

Lithuanian police also posted on Facebook, thanking members of the public who helped detain the suspect. Police added that a pre-trial investigation has been launched on suspicion of attempted murder.
