The Vilnius City Council on Wednesday decided to name part of Kernavės Street after Tadas Tumas, a Lithuanian volunteer fighter who was killed in Ukraine last year.
Kamilė Seraitė-Gogelienė, chairwoman of the municipality’s Historical Memory Commission, previously told BNS that a street near the city centre had been sought and that the location had been agreed upon with the volunteer’s family and comrades.
Kernavės Street is located in the capital’s Šnipiškės area, it links Konstitucijos Avenue and Ozo Street. The name has been given to the section between Krokuvos Street and Konstitucijos avenue.
Tumas, nicknamed Milžinas (Giant), was the first Lithuanian fighter to be killed in the war in Ukraine.

On February 23, 2024, a Russian drone reportedly struck the car he and a Ukrainian soldier were using to transport mines to the front line near Bakhmut.
In March 2024, the Vilnius City Council passed a resolution to commemorate Tumas and Lithuanian filmmaker Mantas Kvedaravičius, who was also killed in Ukraine.
The municipality had planned to decide over the summer how to honour Kvedaravičius, but no decision has yet been made.
Meanwhile, the Bucha City Council decided in February to name a street in the Ukrainian town after Tumas.
